Discover Paris’s Hidden Gem: Jardin du Musée de la Vie Romantique

Everyone who comes to Paris wants to see Montmartre. They climb the hill, they photograph Sacré-Cœur, they walk down through Pigalle feeling slightly disappointed. And then they leave, having missed the most romantic garden in the city, hidden down a leafy alley, three minutes from the crowds.

The Jardin du Musée de la Vie Romantique doesn’t announce itself. There’s no sign you’d notice in a hurry, no queue outside, no souvenir stand. Just a cobbled alley that opens onto something unexpected: a garden surrounding the house where artist Ary Scheffer once lived and worked, all roses and climbing vines and the particular silence that only very old gardens seem to hold.

I discovered it on a Tuesday afternoon when I was trying to avoid the rain. I’ve been going back ever since.

What makes it special

The garden is free to enter in summer, which feels almost impossible for something this beautiful in this city. In the warmer months, the café terrace opens under the canopy of trees. You order tea, you find a chair, and time does something unusual. It slows down. Paris stops feeling like something you need to keep up with.

The museum inside is dedicated to the Romantic era in French art and literature and is worth a visit if you’re curious. George Sand was a regular here. Chopin too. But honestly, most days I just sit in the garden.

The secret nearby

Three streets away, on rue des Martyrs, there’s a small épicerie that makes the best pain au chocolat in the 9th arrondissement. Go before 9am. There’s always a queue by 9:15.
